Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, adisease of the colon (the largest portion of the large intestine), that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores. The main symptom of active disease is usually constant diarrhea mixed with blood, of gradual onset. IBD is often confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Ulcerative colitis shares much in common with Crohn's disease, another form of IBD, but Crohn's disease can affect the whole gastrointestinal tract while ulcerative colitis only attacks the large intestine, and while ulcerative colitis can be treated by performing a total colectomy (i.e., removing the entire large intestine), surgery for Crohn's disease involves removing the damaged parts of the intestine and reconnecting the healthy parts, which does not cure Crohn's, as it can recur after surgery, mostly at the site of the intestinal anastomosis (connection) or in other areas. Ulcerative colitis is an intermittent disease, with periods of exacerbated symptoms, and periods that are relatively symptom-free Extent of involvement Ulcerative colitis is normally continuous from the rectum up the colon. The disease is classified by the extent of involvement, depending on how far up the colon the disease extends: · Distal colitis, potentially treatable with enemas: · Proctitis: Involvement limited to the rectum · Proctosigmoiditis: Involvement of the rectosigmoid colon, the portion of the colon adjacent to the rectum. · Left-sided colitis: Involvement of the descending colon, which runs along the patient's left side, up to the splenic flexure and the beginning of the transverse colon. · Extensive colitis, inflammation extending beyond the reach of enemas: · Pancolitis: Involvement of the entire colon, extending from the rectum to the cecum, beyond which the small intestine begins

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital The Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Adult Congenital Heart Program treats patients with congenital heart disorders. We also host congenital heart disease clinics each month. Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital's strategic approach to treating adults with congenital heart defects combines the expertise of our top pediatric cardiologist with that of an adult cardiologist specially trained in treating congenital heart disease. Our congenital heart disease program was created in response to growing concern among cardiologists across the country that many adults with congenital heart defects may not realize that they need continuous specialty care. Adult congenital heart patients can be divided into three main groups: · Simple congenital heart defects: These were almost completely repaired but still linger as potential problems later in life. · Complex congenital heart disorder problems: These are often found in adults who were born with congenital heart defects that were completely repaired. They typically lead normal lives until they develop problems such as arrhythmia or heart murmurs in their 20s or 30s. · Non-diagnosed congenital heart disorders The numbers of Ghana and West Africa patients with congenital heart defects are increasing with advances in care. Today, about half of congenital heart disease patients are over 18 years old. Before the 1990s, most children with congenital heart problems died. About 5000 children are born with heart disease each year in Ghana and West Africa. That's about one percent of the population. About half of them have significant issues. Based on those figures, it is estimated that adults with congenital heart disease in Ghana and West Africa need ongoing care.

CardioMEMS Heart Failure System Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital is the first and only hospital in Ghana and West Africa to use the CardioMEMS monitor for heart failure patients. The CardioMEMS HF System is the first and only FDA-approved heart failure monitoring device that has been proven to significantly reduce hospital admissions when used by physicians to manage heart failure. The CardioMEMS device makes it possible for physicians to monitor their heart failure patient's condition on a daily basis while they are at home. The patient receives the device while in the hospital then returns home where each night while they are asleep information is transmitted to the Advanced Heart Failure Team. This makes it possible for personalized medication management. It is expected that patients will feel better, need to be admitted to the hospital less often and the overall cost for management for heart failure will be lower. CardioMEMS: · Features a miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor that is implanted in the pulmonary artery (PA) during a minimally invasive procedure to directly measure PA pressure. · Allows patients to transmit PA pressure readings from home to their health care providers, allowing for personalized and proactive management to reduce the likelihood of hospitalization. · Proactive management of heart failure and will greatly benefit patients, caregivers, their families and the greater health care economy. Ventricular Assist Devices The Heart and Vascular Center offers treatment options for patients with advanced heart failure. In the past the only option for those suffering with advanced heart failure was hospice care or a heart transplant. Due to limited availability of organs, heart pumps called ventricular assist devices (VAD) were created. In 2009, the FDA approved VADs for long term cardiac support where the patient can return to normal activities at home. A VAD is a heart pump that is surgically implanted that takes over much of the work for a sick heart. The Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Heart Health and Vascular Center is recognized as a leader in the management of patients with advanced heart failure. We use mechanical circulatory support to treat those suffering from severe congestive heart failure. VADs are offered for the following reasons. First, patients who are transplant candidates and are too sick to wait for a heart can receive a VAD as a bridge to transplant. Other patients who do not qualify for heart transplantation can receive a VAD as destination therapy, meaning they live with the VAD for the rest of their life. Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital's VAD program is directed by board certified heart failure specialists, and cardiothoracic surgeons who serves at the surgical center of the VAD and heart transplant programs.
