Geriatric Services Although growing older brings many rewards, it can also bring its own set of difficulties. Challenges such as the loss of loved ones, loss of independence, physical burdens and illnesses, and the need for increased medication use can often lead to problems with depression, anxiety, confusion, and other symptoms. We offer consultation, evaluation, and psychiatric treatment of a variety of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral conditions encountered during the aging process. Outpatient Services These are the least restrictive alternatives for treatment and include medication management and individual, group, and family talk therapies. Our outpatient clinic is staffed by board-certified psychiatrists who have completed additional training in geriatric psychiatry, thus ensuring the highest quality of care. As part of a teaching hospital, our clinic also provides attending physician supervised care through our fellows, who are in the process of completing their specialty training. We offer initial consultations, evaluation, diagnosis, and follow-up medical management of various emotional, cognitive, and behavioral issues. As indicated, we will refer patients for neuropsychological (or memory) testing, other medical tests, electroconvulsive therapy, and outpatient psychotherapy. When coming for an evaluation, it is helpful to bring medical records including a comprehensive list of all the medications that you are taking, test results (such as blood Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Seasons Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization This program provides thorough, evidence-based care for many psychiatric illnesses, including depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. Care is coordinated with your current provider and offers an alternative to hospitalization. The program provides treatment, education and coping skills that help patients manage their symptoms and improve their level of functioning. What to expect from a Group Psychotherapy Program The first step is the initial assessment. On day one, you will meet with a nurse and a psychiatrist for several hours in the morning to go over your medical and mental health history and review your medications. After a brief orientation by the clinical counselor, you can go to your first group session. Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Seasons is an intensive group therapy program, which means you will participate in several groups each day. You will also have the opportunity to meet regularly with a social worker and a psychiatrist one-on-one. If your treatment plan calls for an intensive outpatient program, you will come two to four days a week. If your psychiatrist determines you would benefit from the partial hospitalization program, you will come five days a week. The program begins at 8:00 in the morning and ends at 4:00 pm in the afternoon. Lunch is served. Is Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Seasons right for you? There are many benefits of participating in an intensive outpatient program. You’ll have a safety and support network that can help decrease the need to be in the hospital. Patients often find a stay in the hospital uncomfortable and less desirable than staying in their own home and own bed at night. As long as your needs can be met safely at home, you can have the best of both worlds: the comforts of home in the evening hours, and receiving therapy and intensive treatment during the daytime. For those who are just coming out of the hospital, it’s often difficult to make the transition, and patients are at risk for relapse and readmission. This program will help to ensure a smooth transition and decrease the risk of being re-hospitalized. The Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Seasons treatment team will be working hard to help you meet your goals. Achieving an optimal outcome requires a serious commitment from the patient, as well! The key to success is a willingness to participate in intensive psychotherapy groups and take an active role in your recovery. Patients who are actively psychotic, who have a serious drug or alcohol problem, or who have cognitive impairment (dementia) will not benefit from this type of program. Patients must also be able to manage walking, eating and other activities on their own, or have an assistant to help. To schedule an assessment, call +233-240000 The Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP) CDAP helps patients with substance abuse or dependency. Programs are offered on both and outpatients and inpatient basis. Brain Stimulation Service This service provides therapies for treatment-resistant depression and severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Senior Care Inpatient Program This program provides help for more complex problems and provides short-term stabilization for adults in crisis. The inpatient setting provides evaluation, medication management, behavioral treatment, patient and family education, and planning for care after discharge. Our Senior Care Unit is a short-stay locked inpatient unit dedicated to treating seniors in crisis. Sometimes emotional, cognitive, or behavioral problems become a threat to one's safety and cannot be safely managed in the home or current environment. Our highly skilled team of board-certified geriatric psychiatrists, nurses, therapeutic aids, and social workers provides 24-hour care to treat a variety of conditions. A comprehensive evaluation of mental and medical problems helps to ensure that an accurate diagnosis is made and appropriate treatments are used. Our patients participate in daily meetings with the psychiatrist and treatment team, group therapy sessions, and often family meetings. When needed, we offer a comprehensive array of diagnostic and treatment options. These include a full range of medical tests, brain imaging, medical consultation, medication management, and electroconvulsive therapy.

Center for Drug & Alcohol Programs (CDAP) The Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP) at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital’s Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) is one of the nation’s premier facilities for the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse problems. Our clinical services, staffed by highly trained professionals, offer the most up-to-date methods for the treatment of addictions. CDAP’s alcohol and substance abuse treatment philosophy encompasses a variety of biological, psychological and social interventions that have been shown to be effective. Unlike many other treatment programs, no single approach characterizes the CDAP program, since we know from experience that not everyone responds to the same therapies in the same way. What is unique about CDAP is that we use therapies that have been shown, in research studies, to be effective in reducing risk of relapse. In addition, our therapists have received specialized training in using these therapies with addicted individuals. Patients are provided with several different treatments, thereby maximizing the chances that they will benefit from the treatment experience. CDAP offers both inpatient treatment, at the Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Institute of Psychiatry, as well as outpatient treatment programs.
