Retina & Vitreous Services Often life's greatest wonders are in the smallest of moments. Together, the retina and vitreous bring the tiniest detail into focus - the seeds of a flower, the handwriting of a loved one, the brilliant colors of a painting. Eye health is essential for such intricate vision. As the population ages, the number of Ghanaians with retinal and vitreous disorders and vision loss is steadily increasing. Eye Institute at the Kings & Queens Medical University College & KQTH strives to offer the latest in technological and surgical advancements for the prevention and treatment of retinal disorders. Many of the potential disorders of the retina and vitreous can be prevented or fully treated if detected early by a skilled ophthalmologist. Our highly-trained specialists are devoted to the care of the retina and the vitreous, the "back of the eye" components essential to clear vision. At Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Eye Institute, we begin our patient relationship with a consultation and thorough eye examination, which may include further testing to allow our doctors to detect diseases at very early stages, and to monitor how diseases improve or progress over time. We continue that relationship by developing a treatment plan that is unique for each patient and providing comprehensive follow-through care for the life of the disorder. At Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Eye Institute, our vitreo-retinal specialists use laser surgery, medications, and other state-of-the art treatments and therapies to provide comprehensive, compassionate care for patients dealing with these conditions, as well as retinal detachments or tears, macular holes, retinoblastoma, uveitis, eye cancer, flashes and floaters and retinitis pigmentosa. Our goal is not only to provide the very best care and treatment, but also to work with our patients to address short-term eye health needs while creating an ongoing patient-doctor relationship that will ensure our patients don't miss out on life's most wonderful moments - even the smallest ones. If you, or someone you know, has disorders of the retina and vitreous, contact Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Eye Institute at +233-24-00000

The Dr Jerryson Gidisu Center enjoys collaborative relationships with many other programs at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital, as well as outside of the institution, locally, nationally and internationally. What are clinical trials? Clinical research studies are special, highly structured programs in which we learn more about Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Drug trials are designed so that we are able to evaluate new medications to see if they are safe and effective. Each trial or study will have a very specific set of illness characteristics which the patient must meet if they wish to participate (“inclusion” and “exclusion” criteria). These may include medications you have been on, how long you have had your illness, and the state of your health in general. Clinical trial information changes on a daily basis. Many clinical trials accept only a limited number of participants. Further, new trials are added on a routine basis as they are approved by the various institutions involved. Therefore, we suggest you check back often if you are interested in a specific treatment for a specific condition in order to review your options. We currently offer trials for the following conditions: • Early untreated Parkinson’s disease • Early treated Parkinson’s disease • Advanced Parkinson’s disease with wearing off symptom • Cervical dystonia • Huntington’s disease • Freezing of gait with Deep Brain Stimulation • Cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, contact +233-24000000 or email research@kqmuc.edu.gh. About Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS). It is also believed to be an autoimmune disease; a disease where the body’s immune system attacks the myelin (see below). It is among the most common neurological diseases causing disability in young adults in Africa, North America and Europe. MS primarily results from the destruction of myelin. The myelin is made by oligodendrocytes (an important cell type of the CNS) and serves to insulate nerve fibers, helping them to conduct electrical impulses more efficiently. • The nerve cells or neurons are the main component of the gray matter. • Each nerve cell has an axon (the nerve fiber) which conducts nerve impulses to and from the brain. The areas where the inflammation and demyelination occur are called plaques. • Plaques may be located in the optic nerves, cerebral hemispheres, brainstem and spinal cord. • Axons (or nerve fibers) are relatively spared in demyelination, compared to the myelin itself. • However recent studies have shown that there is nerve fiber destruction as well as myelin destruction. • The axonal loss is probably an important determinant of permanent, irreversible neurological impairment in MS. • Kings & Queens Teaching Hospitalular dystrophy Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Neurosciences Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Neurosciences offers the most advanced treatment and cutting-edge therapies available for patients of all ages with diseases of the nervous system. Patient Care Multidisciplinary Clinics Recruitment in medical oncology has allowed for the continuing expansion of our multidisciplinary clinic offerings. The multidisciplinary setting allows patients with certain malignancies to see all their different physicians (medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, et al) in one clinic appointment. Their cases are discussed at tumor board conferences prior to the patients’ appointment so that state-of-the-art patient care can be discussed and treatment plans implemented. This setting allows the medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and surgeons to discuss the different cases as a group. This year we opened two multidisciplinary clinics which are also held weekly at Cancer Center: two breast clinics, one thoracic, one neuro-oncology and one head/neck clinic. Kings and Queens Teaching Hospital Cancer Center The Cancer Center is the largest academic cancer center in Ghana and West Africa.
