Nephrology offers diagnostic studies relating to the entire spectrum of medical renal disease with emphasis on hypertension and fluid electrolyte problems. The Dialysis Unit trains patients for home dialysis. Access to renal transplant is provided through cooperation with Surgery Services. The clinical programs of the Division of Nephrology involve two teaching hospitals and two ambulatory care facilities: Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital contains all surgical and medical sub-specialties, and most sub-specialties operate dedicated inpatient services. There are a total of nine special (intensive) care units and nine station acute dialysis units under the medical direction of the Division of Nephrology Faculty. The Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital acute dialysis unit supports all of our in-hospital continuous therapies such as CVVH and similar techniques. The acute dialysis unit also serves as a backup facility for our six chronic ambulatory satellite hemodialysis units in the supports dialysis for all patients hospitalized at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital who need dialysis. The training facility for our 50-patient home peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis program is based in our Units. The renal and renal-pancreas transplantation programs are based at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital. These programs perform 120-160 renal/renal-pancreas transplants annually, rating it in the top most active transplant program nationally. The Surgical Transplantation team provides excellent general surgery support and vascular access for our hemodialysis patients. The Surgical Transplant program is located physically on a ward area geographically shared with the Medical Nephrology Service. Patients in our dialysis program and those with renal related problems admitted to University Hospital are generally admitted to our categorical Nephrology inpatient service. Sinusitis The Sinus Center treats all varieties of acute and chronic sinusitis, including allergic fungal sinusitis, aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD), nasal polyps, pediatric sinusitis and cystic fibrosis–employing the latest medical and surgical therapies for these conditions. Skull Base Tumors Nearly all benign and malignant tumors of the sinuses and skull base can now be removed surgically using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. Nasal Congestion and Septal Deviation Nasal congestion, drainage and post nasal drip can often be treated medically with only worst cases requiring surgery. Post Nasal Drainage Nasal drainage is extremely common and comes from a variety of conditions, including acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, and non-allergic rhinitis. Allergy Allergies are very common in Ghana. The Sinus Center offers the latest forms of treatment, including medications, allergy drops and allergy shots. Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Leak The center is one of the most experienced in the world in endoscopic repair of CSF leaks and encephaloceles. Orbital and Tear Duct Conditions Endoscopic treatments for Graves disease of the eye, as well as tear duct blockage is performed by our surgeons. Smell and Taste Disorders Lost sense of smell and taste can be disabling. The Sinus Center offers comprehensive testing and cutting edge research in these disorders. Clinical Nutrition Services Overview Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital nutrition services are provided by a team of Registered Dietitians (RDs) who have acquired their nutrition expertise through an advanced nutrition science degree and dietetic internship program. To provide the highest level of care, dietitians managing specialty patients have received additional certifications in diabetes education (CDE) and nutrition support (CNSD). The clinical nutrition organization structure is designed to integrate nutrition services into every aspect of patient care. Nutrition services are provided to inpatients and outpatients of both the pediatric and adult populations. The clinical nutrition team is part of the Digestive Disease Center. The Pediatric Dietitians at the Kings & Queens Medical University College & Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital provide comprehensive nutrition services for patients of all ages in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The clinical staff develops appropriate nutrition care plans for infants, children, and adolescents with a variety of conditions. The nutrition care plans, include but not limited to, screens, assessments, counseling, education, and foodservice liaison. Members Of Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital's Medical Team The pediatric dietitians are an important part of the multidiscipline team at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital. They work closely with these teams in the hospital and outpatient clinics to provide patients with a continuum of care throughout all Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital services. They routinely participate in team meetings for daily care called rounds, where the dietitian provides the nutrition recommendations needed for each patient.
