Our Children’s Heart Center also serves as the tertiary referral center for the highly respected Children's Heart Program of Ghana and West Africa. The Children's Heart Program is a network of pediatric cardiology providers and outreach centers throughout the state, offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care to all Ghana, West Africa children and surrounding regions. Since the earliest days of congenital heart surgery, all of the specialists caring for children with heart disease in the state of Ghana and West Africa have worked together to coordinate care and provide the best possible outcomes to our patients. Today more pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiac surgeons in KQTH provide that coordinated care. Outstanding outcomes coupled with an individualized approach to each patient has resulted in referrals now coming from across the Ghana as well as many foreign countries. To optimize the care of the most critical patients, all of the surgical and catheterization procedures are performed in The Children’s Heart Center at the Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital. This system allows for the highest level of care by the specialized teams while still assuring that most of the patient’s care is delivered closer to home. This coordinated approach is unique to our state and we are proud to work so closely with our statewide colleagues to provide it. The mission of the Children's Heart Program is to provide the best possible coordinated cardiac care to this patient population. Clinical evaluations for problems ranging from the more common occurrences of chest pain, murmurs, fainting and palpitations to complex forms of congenital and acquired heart disease are performed at offices located throughout the state. We also provide are for infants in our state-of-the-art Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), as well as heart health and preventive cardiology through our Heart Health Program. The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) is a 10 bed state-of-the-art area specifically designed and staffed with experts in the field. The physicians and staff provide comprehensive care for complex medical and surgical patients from newborns to adults. The PCICU is one of only a few intensive care units in the country - dedicated exclusively to pediatric heart care. The PCICU is equipped to provide the highest complexity therapies including administration of inhaled nitric oxide, and employment of mechanical cardiac support with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist devices. The multidisciplinary team has a specific cardiac focus and includes specialized nurses, respiratory therapists, a pharmacist, clinical assistants, clinical nutritionists, occupational, physical and speech therapist, as well as specifically trained physicians in pediatric cardiology and critical care medicine. The environment promotes a culture of safety. The PCICU boast hospital acquired infection rates well below the national average, with no central line associated blood stream infections or ventilator associated pneumonia in over a year. The unit has its own waiting room dedicated solely for families with a child in the PCICU, complete with computers with Internet access, televisions, a private consultation room and a private lactation room for breastfeeding mothers. This waiting room is staffed by a guest relations specialist who assists families with lodging, transportation and other needs. Pediatric Cardiac Step-Down Unit The pediatric cardiac step down unit provides highly specialized patient care for children not requiring an ICU. This recently remodeled intermediate care unit features 14 private rooms with in-room sleeping available for family members. Similar to the PCICU the team is made up of specialist from many disciplines all with a specific pediatric cardiac focus and all who promote excellence. Despite the numerous central lines this unit manages due to the need for vasoactive infusions, they boast an amazing 3 years without at central line associated blood stream infection.
