Sarcoma Program Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Cancer Center’s comprehensive Sarcoma Cancer Program is the only one of its kind in Ghana and West Africa. Our program, based on a multidisciplinary team approach, is committed to enhancing the care of sarcoma patients. Sarcoma is a rare form of bone and tissue cancer. The tumors are found in bone, Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital, connective tissue, fat, nerves, blood vessels, and cartilage. They can affect people of all ages. In the Africa, there are about 11,000 new cases of sarcoma diagnosed each year. Since this cancer is so rare, it is important that patients be treated at a center with a team of physicians experienced in this disease. Soft tissue sarcoma is often found as a painless mass. They are common in the thigh and pelvis regions but can be located anywhere. Bone sarcomas are often painful. Sickle Cell Program Our pediatric sickle cell program offers comprehensive services to patients diagnosed with a hemoglobinopathy. Speech-Language Pathology Speech-language pathology at Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Children's Hospital is a part of the KQTH Institute for Voice and Swallowing. Laryngology/Voice and Swallowing The Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital Institute for Voice and Swallowing is the first in Ghana and West Africa to provide a multidisciplinary center for the evaluation, treatment, and a clinical research of laryngeal, voice, and swallowing disorders for adults and children. Because voice, swallowing, and respiratory disorders often occur together, the Institute offers maximized care by collaborating with a range of specialists. What makes us different is we integrate the evaluation and treatment of voice and swallowing under one roof. Given the inter-relationship of voice and swallowing, it is critical to attend to both functions. As a division of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the Institute brings together a wealth of resources and expertise. Kings & Queens Teaching Hospital physicians and staff provide state-of-the-art care for adults and children presenting a wide variety of disorders. In addition to providing patient care, the Institute is committed to building public awareness of voice and swallowing disorders through teaching and education. Clinical research is another vital component of the Institute. Research efforts cover a broad scope, including the study of laryngeal dynamics during coordinated respiration and swallowing, and the effects of esophageal dysfunction on the larynx.
